PADI Advanced Freediver Course (Open Water 20m)
Push deeper to 20 metres. Master advanced equalization, technique, and safety to dive with confidence.
Before you enroll
This course builds on earlier training. You will need the following before joining:
Open-water freediving credential
- PADI Freediver 10m
Hold an equivalent qualification from another agency? Mention it when you check out and we will verify it for you.
Highlights
- Push depth to 20 metres with confidence
- Advanced equalization and free immersion technique
- Mouthfill and reverse packing introduction
- Deep rescue and buddy procedures
How the course unfolds
- 01
Phase 1: eLearning
PADI Advanced Freediver eLearning covering deeper equalisation techniques, mouthfill introduction, and the physiology of deeper dives. Reviewed and discussed before any in water work.
- 02
Phase 2: Shallow Pool Coaching
Shallow water refresh of fundamentals plus advanced apnea drills. CO2 and O2 tolerance work, longer dynamic distances, and refining the relaxation that holds at depth.
- 03
Phase 3: Deep Pool Coaching
Deep pool sessions for progressive depth work. Mouthfill rehearsal, free immersion, and mouthfill management drills before transferring the technique to open water.
- 04
Phase 4: Open Water
Open water depth progression with focused coaching. Build to deeper constant weight dives with strong safety, equalisation, and surface protocol. Certification when skills are consistent at target depth.
By the end you’ll
- Deeper constant weight descents to 20 metres
- Mouthfill technique introduced and rehearsed
- Free immersion and refined finning technique
- Deep buddy rescue and emergency procedures
- PADI Advanced Freediver certification recognised worldwide
Course requirements
What every student completes to finish this course.
Complete the e-learning module
Required to complete
Finish the PADI Advanced Freediver e-learning, covering advanced equalisation, mouthfill basics, and deep-dive safety, before in-water sessions begin.
Mask off at 10m
Required to complete
Remove the mask at 10m, complete a short hold or swim without it, then ascend in control with the mask off or replaced. Tests comfort, equalisation without visual feedback, and a calm airway response.
Single fin ascent at 10m
Required to complete
Descend on the line to 10m, then ascend using a single fin (or a single-fin technique drill), holding trim and streamline through the ascent. Tests one-sided propulsion and body control when a fin is lost or removed.
Rescue at 10m with 25m surface tow
Required to complete
Recover an unresponsive diver from 10m, bring them to the surface in control, remove their mask, perform rescue breaths, and tow them 25m on the surface while continuing simulated revival (blow-tap-talk, CPR cues as briefed).
Buddy protocol at 10m
Required to complete
Act as safety for a buddy diving to 10m: matched descent timing, meet at the safety stop depth, escort to the surface, and run the recovery-breathing OK protocol for 30 seconds after surfacing.
Free immersion (FIM) at 20m
Target: 20 m
Pull down the line to 20m using arms only (no fins), turn cleanly at the plate, and pull back up to a clean surface protocol.
Constant weight (CWT) at 20m
Target: 20 m
Descend to 20m in constant weight (fins or monofin) under your own power, turn at the plate, and ascend with a clean surface protocol.
Dynamic with bifins (DYN-B) at 50m
Target: 50 m
Swim 50m or more horizontally in the pool on a single breath with bifins, holding depth and streamline throughout, surfacing with a clean recovery protocol.
Static apnea (STA) at 2:30
Target: 2m 30s
Hold the breath face-down on the surface for 2 minutes 30 seconds or longer with a buddy running tap signals, then complete the recovery breathing protocol.
